Start Fresh: A New Year’s Checklist

It’s no wonder the custom of adopting annual resolutions coincides with the year’s beginning rather than its middle or end. A new year means a fresh start—a milestone that signals an opportunity for positive change. Like a blank canvas to a painter, the New Year invites us to entertain new possibilities, inspires us to innovate upon the past and fills us with “momentum of purpose.”

While this sense of positive propulsion is often directed toward personal development, it can also be useful for accomplishing tangible goals, which is why the New Year is an ideal time to review and renew your to-do list. Whether you need to catch up on overdue maintenance, have a project you’ve been putting off or simply want to start off on the right foot, it’s best to get moving while the coals of inspiration are still hot. Here are some areas to address: Continue reading “Start Fresh: A New Year’s Checklist” »

’Tis the season to be jolly, but for many people, the holidays are more synonymous with stress than merriment. From checking off your gift shopping list to getting your home ready to accommodate guests, the nonstop pace of the “holiday hustle” can eventually dim even the brightest of spirits. That’s why, in the interest of avoiding a yuletide meltdown, it’s important to be proactive about self-care in the weeks leading up to your seasonal celebration. Consider the following ideas for busting your stress buildup:

Practice simple stress-managing techniques. You may not realize it, but the power to alleviate stress is literally in the palm of your hand. For example, placing your palm to your forehead has a legitimate physiological effect. Continue reading “Holiday Stress-Busters” »

Caring for Your Child’s Eyes

A child’s eye health may be easy to overlook, but preventative care can have a lifelong impact. Photo: American Ratings Corporation (2016)

with Dr. Thomas Aller, president of Dr. Thomas A. Aller Optometrist, Inc.

Hygiene, nutrition, physical safety, emotional well-being…there are a lot of things to think about when raising young children, which is why parents often find themselves prioritizing immediate concerns over less pressing ones. One common instance of the latter is eye health—after all, except for severe instances, vision problems are rarely ostensibly apparent, which makes it easy for them to go unnoticed. However, the furtive character of such problems makes it all the more crucial for parents to give some foresight to their children’s optical health. Continue reading “Caring for Your Child’s Eyes” »

More than 120 years since its inception, chiropractic treatment has finally come into its own as a health care alternative, having gained widespread acceptance by professionals and patients alike. According to Dr. Jag Dhesi, owner of Springtown Wellness Center in Livermore, more people than ever are turning to chiropractic treatment because they’re attracted by its attestable results and natural, non-invasive character. “There are few instances in health care where a patient comes into an appointment wincing with pain and walks out pain-free—especially without any kind of injection, pill or surgical procedure,” he says. “However, with chiropractic, that’s often the case.” Continue reading “Spinal Destination: The Rise of Chiropractic” »

Justin Greer has been servicing trees for Sonoma County residents since he was a teenager, and today, he’s the director of operations at Western Tree Removal Specialists. We took a few minutes to speak with Justin about his field of expertise and gain some helpful knowledge.

Q: Do trees really need to be serviced? Can’t we just let them be?
A: There are a couple reasons why trees need to be serviced, both of which are tied to changed environmental factors. Before humans came on the scene, trees grew in fierce competition for resources, which kept growth in check. Picture a forest where not a drop of light gets through the broad canopy and the trees grow so close together that they’re practically holding each other up.

Flash forward to today, where the circumstances are reversed: Trees are often situated alone or in small groups, and they’re able to get all the water and sunlight they need—not to mention the synthesized nutrients we feed them via fertilizers, which are basically plant steroids. Altogether, this causes trees to grow much faster and larger than they had under previous circumstances. Continue reading “Tree Service Overview: Q&A with Justin Greer” »
