NRCA logoThe National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA) is a nonprofit trade organization that has been advocating for roofing professionals since 1886. This big-tent organization represents not only roofing contractors but all professionals that play a part in the roofing industry, including engineers, consultants, material distributors and architects. Its members come from 53 countries and all 50 states. The NRCA’s primary goal is to advocate for those working in the roofing industry and help its members better serve their customers.

Technical Expertise and Education

The NRCA has created and organized a wealth of technical information on best roofing practices, all of which are available to roofing professionals and consumers. The NRCA has published numerous roofing manuals and provides information on building codes worldwide. These materials are available through the NRCA’s online bookstore in print and electronic formats. Likewise, the organization offers advice and technical support to roofing professionals.

The NRCA further disseminates its technical expertise by offering many educational opportunities. Through the NRCA University, the organization leads classes, workshops and certification programs across the nation. Online, members have access to free webinars and lessons to help bolster their knowledge of best roofing practices. Topics include roofing standards, safety issues, employee training and business management. Materials are available in English and Spanish.

Safety and Regulation

The NRCA understands that its members must comply with a range of regulations. First, they must meet safety standards specific to the roofing industry. Second, as independent business owners, they must provide workers’ compensation and health insurance. The NRCA helps its members understand and comply with the regulations specific to their municipalities so workers are safe and businesses have their insurance and financial obligations covered.

Government Advocacy

In recent years, the NRCA has taken a greater foothold in Washington, D.C. The organization lobbies on behalf of the roofing industry in areas such as tax policy, energy efficiency, labor regulations, immigration and heath care. In addition to meeting with legislators, the NRCA operates a political action committee, ROOFPAC, which supports political candidates who are pro-business and “understand the effect government regulation has on the bottom lines of roofing businesses.”

Outreach

Through its Community Service Disaster Relief Committee, NRCA members donate their time and expertise to a number of charitable organizations. Chief among these is Rebuilding Together, a volunteer organization that “rehabilitates the houses of low-income homeowners, particularly the elderly and disabled, and families with children.” Additionally, the NRCA administers the Melvin Kruger Endowed Scholarship Program, which provides “scholarships to college and vocational-technical school students who plan to pursue a career in the roofing or building construction industries.” The scholarships are awarded to NRCA members, their immediate families and their employees.
