5. Cabinets
If you want to avoid a full-scale cabinet remodeling project, consider refurbishing your existing cabinets. In the case of kitchen cabinetry, this can be accomplished by simply repainting and refinishing the wood. Functional modifications, such as replacing deep drawers with roll-out shelves for easier access, can further reinvent your cabinets without the need for replacement.

6. Moving
When packing for a move, you can maximize space and identify unwanted items by working in concentric circles according to your house plan. Start with the rooms farthest from the center, such as the attic, basement and storage rooms. After that, move into the bedrooms, family room and kitchen. Pack as you go and make separate piles for items you plan to sell, donate, or give to friends and relatives.

7. Paint
Before you buy paint for an interior painting project, make sure you know the exact square footage of the room to be painted. As a general rule, purchase one gallon of paint for every 400 square feet. Covering textured, rough or unprimed surfaces may require more. Remember: Paint doesn’t stick very well to dirty walls, so clean them with soap and water and let them dry overnight before you start.

8. Remodeling
If you start running out of space during a bathroom remodel, you may be able to steal some from a neighboring room or closet (a process called “space reconfiguration”). If your overall space is limited, consider purchasing a jetted tub and shower combination or installing a pedestal lavatory instead of a vanity cabinet with a sink.

9. Hardwood floors
Protect your hardwood floors by placing throw rugs, floor runners and area rugs in front of doors, seating areas and other high traffic areas. Constant wear can dull the finish and strip the wax, which can make the floor look old and permanently mar its surface. Rugs should be made of breathable material and not backed with plastic, foam or rubber, as this can trap moisture and discolor the floor.

10. Windows
One of the most effective ways to cut energy costs is to replace single-pane windows with double-pane windows. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, inefficient windows account for up to 25 percent of the average household’s energy bills. Conversely, modern windows manufactured with new technologies like low-E coatings and argon/krypton gas fills can cut energy costs by as much as 15 percent.
